Orange County Jail Bail Bonds: IRC Santa Ana, Theo Lacy & How Release Works

If someone you love was arrested anywhere in Orange County, they went to the same place first: the Intake Release Center in Santa Ana. Understanding what happens there — and where they go next — is the difference between a release that takes a few hours and a night spent calling the wrong phone numbers. This guide walks through the Orange County jail system the way families actually encounter it.

The short version: everyone booked into Orange County custody is processed through the Intake Release Center (IRC) at 550 N Flower St in Santa Ana. Charges and bail typically appear about two to three hours after booking. Once a bond is posted, the Sheriff’s Department puts average release at roughly four hours. The Intake Release Center (IRC), Santa Ana

The IRC is the front door and the back door of the entire county jail system. In the Sheriff’s Department’s own words, it “is responsible for processing all individuals being booked into, and released from, the Orange County Jail system.” It handles roughly 60,000 bookings and 53,000 releases a year, and it runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Intake includes medical and mental-health screening, classification, and records processing, which is why booking is rarely quick. Expect two to four hours before charges and a bail amount are visible.

Where they go after intake

Orange County runs several facilities, and which one someone lands in depends on classification, not geography.

Central Men’s and Central Women’s Jail — 550 N Flower St, Santa Ana, co-located with the IRC. Maximum security, housing both sentenced people and those awaiting trial. Central Men’s holds roughly 1,400; Central Women’s roughly 385.
Theo Lacy Facility — 501 The City Drive South, Orange, CA 92868. Phone (714) 935-6940; bail window (714) 935-6905. The county’s other large facility, and one of only two places a bond can be posted.
James A. Musick Facility — 13420 Alton Pkwy, Irvine, CA 92618. Phone (949) 855-2600. Minimum and medium security. Note the address: Musick moved into a brand-new 896-bed building in late 2024, so older listings showing a Musick Road address are out of date.

Where bail is actually posted in Orange County

This trips up more families than anything else. Bonds are accepted at two locations only, and their hours are very different:

Intake Release Center, Santa Ana — 24 hours a day. This is where nearly every after-hours release happens.
Theo Lacy Facility, Orange — daily, but only from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

If you are trying to get someone out at 11 p.m., the answer is the IRC. A licensed bondsman handles this for you — you do not need to drive to Santa Ana yourself.

If you intend to post the full amount in cash instead, the Sheriff’s Department accepts cash, cashier’s checks made payable to “County of Orange – Sheriff’s Department,” money orders, traveler’s checks, and personal checks drawn on a California bank (two forms of ID required, with a per-account limit). How long release takes

The Sheriff’s Department publishes its own timing for the Theo Lacy Facility, which is more useful than guesswork and a reasonable guide countywide:

Charges and bail information available: usually 2 to 3 hours after booking
Release after bail is posted: approximately 4 hours on average, sometimes as little as 2, sometimes as much as 6

Finding someone in Orange County custody

Important change: the old no-login “Who’s In Jail” search no longer exists. Orange County replaced it with an Inmate Information System that still costs nothing but requires you to register an account with an email address and password. The Sheriff’s Department also notes that the current version does not display charges — so even after signing up, you may not see what someone was arrested for.

Which Orange County courthouse hears the case

Orange County assigns misdemeanor cases by the city where the offense occurred. All four justice centers below hear criminal matters, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

One caveat worth knowing: felony trials are assigned based on which courtroom is available, not on where the arrest happened. So a felony case may not stay at the local justice center even though the misdemeanor rules suggest it would. Always confirm the location on the paperwork rather than assuming.

How bail is set in Orange County

Orange County publishes a Uniform Bail Schedule, updated annually and currently effective January 1, 2026. Unlike Los Angeles County — which now releases many lower-level offenses without money bail before arraignment — Orange County still assigns dollar figures across the schedule, and any offense not specifically listed is set according to the top term of the potential sentence.

What to do right now

Get the full legal name and, if you have it, the booking number. A date of birth helps.
