Riverside & San Bernardino County Jail Bail Process: Facilities, Courts & Release

The Inland Empire covers a lot of ground, and its two county jail systems are spread across it. Someone arrested in Temecula does not go to the same facility as someone arrested in Riverside, and a San Bernardino County arrest could land in Rancho Cucamonga or Adelanto depending on where it happened. This guide maps both systems so you know where to look and who to call.

The short version: Riverside County runs five detention facilities, San Bernardino County runs four. San Bernardino’s inmate locator is free and needs no account; Riverside’s is less reliable, and a phone call is often faster. Estimate your cost with our California bail cost calculator.

Riverside County jail facilities

Robert Presley Detention Center — 4000 Orange St, Riverside, CA 92501 · (951) 955-4500. Downtown Riverside, the county’s primary detention center.
Cois M. Byrd Detention Center — 30755-B Auld Rd, Murrieta, CA 92563 · (951) 696-3050. Serves the southwest county including Temecula and Murrieta.
Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility — 1627 S Hargrave St, Banning, CA 92220 · (951) 922-7300. The Sheriff’s largest facility, serving the pass area.
John J. Benoit Detention Center — 82675 Highway 111, Indio, CA 92201 · (760) 863-8252. Serves the Coachella Valley.
Blythe Jail — 260 N Spring St, Blythe, CA 92225 · (760) 921-5780. The far eastern end of the county.

Two name changes worth knowing. The Cois M. Byrd Detention Center was formerly the Southwest Detention Center, and a great deal of older information online still uses the old name. And Chuckawalla Valley State Prison in Blythe is not a county jail — it is a state prison, and it was deactivated in November 2024. Do not confuse it with the Blythe Jail. Sending family 200 miles into the desert to the wrong facility is a mistake we see more often than you would think.

Note also that the Byrd facility is building B at 30755 Auld Road; the Southwest Justice Center courthouse is building D on the same campus. The letter matters.

San Bernardino County jail facilities

San Bernardino County runs roughly 7,400 jail beds and processes about 100,000 bookings a year across four facilities.

West Valley Detention Center — 9500 Etiwanda Ave, Rancho Cucamonga, CA 91739 · (909) 708-8371 (countywide inmate locator line). By far the busiest, with about 3,347 beds and 50,000–60,000 bookings a year. Primarily pre-trial. It is the main intake point for the west end of the county and has dedicated male and female intake areas.
Central Detention Center — 630 E Rialto Ave, San Bernardino, CA 92415 · (909) 386-0969. The primary booking facility for East Valley agencies. It also serves as a West Coast hub for the U.S. Marshals Service — worth knowing, because a federal hold is a common reason a family cannot find someone in the county system.
High Desert Detention Center — 9438 Commerce Way, Adelanto, CA 92301 · (760) 530-9300. Houses over 2,100 people, serving the Victor Valley and High Desert.
Glen Helen Rehabilitation Center — 18000 Institution Rd, Devore, CA 92407 · (909) 708-8371; visiting appointments (909) 887-0364. Houses county-sentenced men and women and runs an inmate fire camp. The facility is currently in the middle of a remodel that will change how its housing units are used, so confirm before driving out.

Finding someone in custody

San Bernardino County has the better tool by a wide margin. Its inmate locator is free, requires no account, and returns the current facility, arrest details, charges and visiting information. Search by booking number, or by name plus date of birth. The locator line is (909) 708-8371.

One caution the county states itself: the locator may not show the current court appearance date. Confirm that with the Superior Court, not the jail.

Riverside County’s lookup is less dependable. The published search at jimspub.riversidesheriff.org works intermittently, and when it does load, it shows the facility and next court date but not the bail amount or charges. If it fails, call the Sheriff’s Corrections line at (951) 955-2400 — or let us pull it. Our California inmate locator collects the working links for every county.

Riverside County also does not publish where women are housed or which facility handles what. Rather than guess, use the locator or call — the record will name the current facility.

Riverside County courthouses

Criminal cases in Riverside County are heard at five locations only. Every location uses the same phone number, (951) 777-3147.

Riverside Hall of Justice — 4100 Main St, Riverside, CA 92501. Criminal only, 21 courtrooms. Note the Historic Courthouse next door at 4050 Main is a different building.
Southwest Justice Center — 30755-D Auld Rd, Murrieta, CA 92563. Criminal, traffic and juvenile.
Banning Justice Center — 311 E Ramsey St, Banning, CA 92220.
Larson Justice Center — Indio, serving the Coachella Valley.
Blythe Courthouse — serving the far eastern county.

One warning, because it causes real problems: the Moreno Valley Courthouse does not hear criminal cases. It handles small claims, evictions, civil and traffic matters only. If someone tells you to appear there on a criminal case, the information is wrong, and a missed appearance means a bench warrant.

San Bernardino County courthouses

San Bernardino Justice Center — 247 W Third St, San Bernardino, CA 92415 · (909) 384-1888. Serves San Bernardino, Colton, Highland, Redlands, Yucaipa, Loma Linda, Grand Terrace and the mountain communities including Big Bear and Lake Arrowhead.
Rancho Cucamonga District — 8303 Haven Ave, Rancho Cucamonga, CA 91730 · (909) 350-9764 for criminal. Serves Rancho Cucamonga, Ontario, Upland, Chino, Chino Hills, Montclair, Alta Loma, Fontana, Rialto and Bloomington.
Victorville District — 14455 Civic Dr, Suite 200, Victorville, CA 92392 · (760) 245-6215. Serves Victorville, Barstow, Apple Valley, Hesperia, Adelanto and the High Desert.

The Fontana District does not hear criminal cases. Fontana residents’ criminal matters go to Rancho Cucamonga. Fontana handles small claims, landlord-tenant, probate, traffic and civil harassment.

How bail is set in the Inland Empire

Both counties publish their own bail schedules, and both still use real dollar figures — unlike Los Angeles County, which now releases many lower-level offenses without money bail before arraignment.

San Bernardino County: felony and misdemeanor schedule effective January 1, 2026, revised June 4, 2026. Most misdemeanors carry no scheduled bail unless specifically listed.
Riverside County: a published felony and misdemeanor schedule with a general chart keyed to sentence exposure for offenses not listed by name.

In both counties, when someone is charged with more than one offense, bail is set on the highest single count rather than added together — but bail on separate cases is cumulative. See our California bail amounts hub for figures by charge.

What to do right now

Identify the county. The arresting agency tells you which system to search — a Murrieta arrest is Riverside County, a Fontana arrest is San Bernardino County.
Run the locator. Start with San Bernardino’s if that is the county; it needs no account and loads reliably.
Call a licensed bondsman if the lookup fails or shows no bail. We can confirm the charge and the real number.
